Are your genes your destiny? Join Sydney Ideas for a free screening and discussion of the American science fiction film Gattaca, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Gattaca explores the consequences of genetic selection and manipulation on society through the eyes of genetically less-than-perfect Vincent (Ethan Hawke) and genetically perfect Irene (Uma Thurman). The film screening will be followed by a spirited discussion between commentators from the worlds of ethics, science and the creative arts, who will explore how much the film accurately depicted and predicted today’s technological trends.
Admission to the event is free but bookings are required.
This event is funded by a National Science Week Grant from the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. It is presented by Sydney Ideas and the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine (VELiM) at the University of Sydney in partnership with the Garvan Institute for Medical Research.
