Cracking the World of Forensics: A Keynote by Professor Shari Forbes
Love Sherlock Holmes? Fan of CSI? Dream of cracking cases wide open with your detective skills? Find out how the real experts do it by joining Professor Shari Forbes, world leading forensics expert and our very own Sydney Sherlock, in a Friday night talk on forensics, death and decomposition.
Professor Forbes’ research aims to identify the chemical profile of decomposition odour to enhance the capabilities of cadaver-detection dogs. To do this, Professor Forbes studies the decomposition of human corpses at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER), known to most as the ‘body farm’ — a UTS facility on a bush site in the lower Blue Mountains. Although this may sound gruesome, AFTER is important to human death investigations both in Australia and around the world.
You can also add a visit to The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, an immersive exhibition where you take on the challenge and try to solve a captivating, original mystery in the tradition of the master detective.
Professor Shari Forbes works in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is a core member of the Centre for Forensic Science (CFS). She heads the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER).
