Harbour Cruise: Indigenous Navigation by the Stars

Presented by Australian National Maritime Museum

Enjoy an evening of stargazing on board Tribal Warrior’s Mari Nawi.

On this cruise you’ll learn how to use stars to mark your position from expert Indigenous Astronomer Robert S. Fuller. You’ll also hear stargazing stories from Indigenous tour guide Willy Stevens. In this truly unique Sydney Harbour night-time cruise guests will also participate in a weaving workshop to create their own moon or star!

About the Ship

Mari Nawi (meaning ‘big canoe’ in the Eora language) is a motor vessel used for cruises on Sydney Harbour with an Aboriginal focus. Owned and operated by the Tribal Warrior Association, Mari Nawi is the only Aboriginal commercial charter service on Sydney Harbour.

The Tribal Warrior Association provides Aboriginal people with rare and valuable training, recreational, social and educational opportunities that help unit their communities and revitalise traditional cultural values. The boat acts as a training vessel for their maritime programs and helps forge a vital link of appreciation, respect and understanding between Aboriginal and non-indigenous people.

About your Astronomer & Aboriginal storyteller

Robert S. Fuller is an anthropologist/archaeologist and an expert Indigenous Astronomer. He created the Euahlayi astronomy documentary Star Stories of the Dreaming and is now completing a PHD on the cultural astronomy and songlines of the saltwater Aboriginal peoples of the Australian East Coast.

Willy Stevens is a Muruwari man from North west NSW who grew up in Awabakal country, Newcastle. He is an Indigenous stargazing storyteller and tour guide and currently works as an Aboriginal Student Officer at TAFE NSW. Willy’s experience also extends to Zoo Keeping at Blackbutt Reserve and Taronga Zoo, where he worked with native Australian animals.

Things to Remember:

  • Stargazing is dependent on clear skies. If forecasts indicate that bad weather is expected, the cruise will be cancelled by 2pm on the day of sailing, and ticketed passengers will be notified and refunded.
  • Please bring binoculars and a warm jacket.
  • Parents need to supervise their children.
  • Please consider the agility of those in your group when booking.
